Mohamed Nasheed Sworn-in as President of Maldives


Mohamed Nasheed Anni, a longtime political prisoner, was today sworn-in as President of the island nation, Maldives  after a win in the country’s first democratic Presidential poll that held few days back. He became President after a long rule of  Asia’s longest serving President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was ruling the country for the past 30 years. ” multi-party system, for which we have striven so hard and which entrenches the freedom of expression and protects the right to dissent “, Nasheed said. The swearing in ceremony was attended by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa,India’s Vice President Hamid Ansari and many. The former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom abstained from the Ceremony. ” A government that does not fulfill its pledges forfeits its right to govern. Those who do not deliver electoral pledges cannot take pride in their electoral success “, New President said during the Ceremony.
